(Middletown, CT.) Chairman Jay Polke of the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce announced that the chamber’s KeyBank workshop series will hold a workshop on “Best HR Practices in Hiring, Disciplining and Firing Employees.” The workshop will be held on February 12, 2019, at the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce, 393 Main Street, Middletown at 8:00 a.m. and will last until 10:00 a.m.
This discussion will focus on helping small business owners, HR personnel and managers understand the legal issues presented by modern hiring and firing decisions, and present practical steps employers can take to minimize litigation risk. Specific topics covered include:
- Employment background checks and due diligence
- Drug testing and medical inquiries
- Application and interview process
- Fraudulent employment and/or educational references
- When to discipline and when to fire
- Effective preparation for termination and conducting terminations
- Most common pitfalls and employer best practices
The workshop will be presented by Attorney Joshua A. Hawks-Ladds at Pullman & Comley, LLC. Joshua A. Hawks-Ladds is chair of the firm’s Labor, Employment Law and Employee Benefits Department. His practice includes counseling on and litigating business, construction, labor and employment and civil rights matters and municipal law. Attorney Hawks-Ladds has tried cases in numerous state and federal courts, argued before the Second Circuit Court of Appeals and the Connecticut Supreme and Appellate courts and litigates extensively before administrative tribunals. Attorney Hawks-Ladds frequently lectures and consults on trial practice, business disputes, labor and employment law and municipal issues.
